Penn junior Dylan Throop, the runner-up Oct. 28 at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships who has placed in the top seven in all four races this season, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the Quakers competing Nov. 10 in the NCAA Division 1 Mid-Atlantic Regional at Lehigh University's Goodman Course in Bethlehem, Penn. Throop, who finished 44th in his Ivy League meet debut in 2021, helped Penn finish fifth at Heps. He also reflects on his experience of not completing the race at the 2021 Mid-Atlantic Regional and the challenge of racing the 10-kilometer distance in postseason cross country events after running 8-kilometer races during the regular season. Throop revisits his experiences competing on the Goodman Course and the challenges of the layout, especially after winning a 6-kilometer race in his season opener Sept. 1 at the Lehigh Invitational. He examines the performances of the Penn lineup at the Heps competition and how much the Quakers will benefit from freshman George Keen being able to compete at the Mid-Atlantic Regional after he was knocked down in his Ivy League championship debut and was unable to finish the race. Throop highlights how Penn coach Steve Dolan has prepared a young Quakers lineup throughout the season and his optimism for the group not only during the postseason, but especially in 2024. He also speaks about how the experience and perspective of his own setbacks has helped to provide insight and wisdom for his younger teammates. Throop reflects on former teammate Noah Carey overcoming several setbacks in his career to take third at the 2021 Mid-Atlantic Regional and advance to the NCAA Division 1 Championships. He explains how significant it is to be competing in one of the strongest periods in Ivy League history and how meaningful it has been for Throop to race against Harvard's Graham Blanks, Acer Iverson and Matthew Pereira, with all three scholar-athletes earning All-America honors during their careers. Throop also analyzes the inspiration gained from Blanks winning the men's 6-kilometer race Oct. 13 at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, and what it would mean for the Ivy League to have the Harvard standout capture the NCAA title Nov. 18 at the Panorama Farms Course in Virginia, the same venue where Throop took seventh Oct. 14 at the Pre-Nationals competition.
